From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Hopes are building that Government will provide funding for the long-awaited Newcastle Community Centre this Spring – more than 20 years after the facility was first proposed.
The Mayor, Cllr Eddie Hoare, said with a guarantee of 10% matched funding from City Hall and a “shovel-ready plan” in place, he was optimistic that the €4.34 million requested by Galway City Council would be granted as part of the Government’s Community Centres Investment Fund.
Nationally, 22 proposed community centres are vying for a slice of the €21 million fund, but the Mayor said Newcastle had a number of factors in its favour, as it had planning permission and could get underway as soon as funding was secured.
“We’re looking for €4.34 million in Government funding and the submission for that was made by City Council in June last year.
“I pushed to have 10% matched funding included in Budget 2024. That was agreed and provision has also been made in the budget to provide the necessary resources, by way of an engineer to manage the project,” he said.
