THREE Galway football champions face a weekend of destiny in early January when they attempt to extend glorious seasons in their respective All-Ireland Club semi-finals.

For only the second time ever, Galway title holders have conquered the province at senior, intermediate and junior level in the same year, putting the seal on a progressive footballing 2022 for the county.

The big focus will be on Maigh Cuilinn’s attempt to follow in the footsteps of Corofin, Salthill/Knocknacarra and Caltra by claiming All-Ireland honours at senior level.

But the Galway champions have a big hurdle to clear to even reach the final as they face a battle-hardened Glen of Derry at Croke Park on Sunday week (2pm).

It forms the first part of an attractive All-Ireland semi-final double bill which also features Kilmacud Crokes and Shane Walsh against Kerins O’Rahillys of Kerry.

Having claimed only the club’s second county senior title by edging out Salthill/Knocknacarra at Pearse Stadium in late October, Maigh Cuilinn also emerged as top dogs in Connacht after contrasting wins over Westport, Strokestown and Tourlestrane.
