Arts Week with Judy Murphy
When wildlife cameraman Doug Allan isn’t filming in remote places such as the Antarctic, or giving talks about the amazing planet we inhabit, there’s nothing he likes more than visiting North Connemara, where he has a cottage outside Letterfrack.
Now aged 71, the man who shot such acclaimed series as The Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Frozen Planet and Human Planet, is doing less travelling – partly because of the talks, and partly to reduce his environmental footprint.
Doug, who has won numerous BAFTAs and Emmys for his work, will be at the Town Hall Theatre next Wednesday, November 9, with his show, It’s Wrap, which offers an overview of his adventures through the years.
“I also try to get the message out about climate change, about what we can be doing and should be doing,” he says.
Doug remains an optimist about the future – but says swift action is needed.
“We need to be doing all the things that people are talking about – and quickly.
“Human beings cast a long shadow over the environment,” he observes. Sometimes it’s good; mostly it’s not.
“And considering people only become aware of the damage once a certain level of exploitation has been caused, it’s a challenge to reverse it.”
The melting ice at the North and South Poles is a perfect example.
Temperatures on earth have increased on average by one degree centigrade in the past 100 years, but at the Arctic and Antarctic, the increase has been much higher. In that environment, the difference of a couple of degrees can dictate whether water stays frozen or it thaws.
