Artists Fiona Concannon, Martina Furlong and Marja van Kampen have joined forces for a new exhibition that will open at The Kenny Gallery this Friday, April 5
These three women frequently exhibit together, but Trio, which features more than 40 new paintings, is their first joint outing in Galway.
All are very different painters, but a common theme runs through their work as they examine and capture nature in their various ways
For the Kenny show, Fiona Concannon, from An Spidéal, uses watercolours to explore the depths of colours that can be seen in Connemara sunsets.
Watercolour is her chosen medium as it “lends itself to creating the layers of colours that can be seen in the sky, the light constantly changing”, she says.
Wexford artist Martina Furlong says her work is influenced by her daily experiences, especially by landscape and the relationship between humans and nature. Her paintings for this show explore people’s spiritual ties to the land and how our surroundings link us to our ancestors, history and culture.
Marja van Kampen, who is originally from Holland, is well-known in Galway where she lived for many years and where she co-founded the city-based Artspace Studios. Her paintings are inspired by childhood memories and by travel – her vibrant colour palette and use of patterns are particularly influenced by time she has spent in India.
Trio will be opened by the Director of Galway City Museum, Eithne Verling, this Friday, April 5, at 6pm in The Kenny Gallery in the city’s Liosbán Retail Park and all are welcome. It runs at the gallery and online at www.thekennygallery.ie until Saturday, May 4.
■ The paintings are for sale, admission is free and all are welcome to visit. Any enquiries can be sent to art@kennys.ie
