Renault 5 gets modern make-over with company to turn its attention to the Renault 4

When designing the Renault 5 E-Tech electric, hopes within the Renault camp were high that the public would take to the modern version of their old classic. Not only did it take the International Car of the Year title, it has beguiled the motoring media and the public alike.

Everything was in the right place, and it looked really enchanting. Modernisation of former icon can be a risky business but, in this case it they got it spot on and that has led to its indisputable acclaim.

I have been driving the Renault 5, and while it turns heads on every street corner, it delivers exactly what you would want despite it being fully electric and a little small. Renault engineers have excelled with the design and have managed to give it true driving delight into the bargain.

The exterior is the first aspect that catches the eye with two-tone colours, 18” alloy wheels and attractive front and rear personalities that are decorated with stylish LED lighting and a black B pillar that give it a sporty profile.

Inside the car is packed with technology in a small space. Credit to the designers too for the sporty seating and the rally induced layout.

I would have an issue with the yellow and black material used in the seats and while it would not be my taste, it doesn’t take away from the body-hugging shape and the support. The steering and the dash are also rather fetching and all-in-all the inside is a good place to dwell.

There are three specifications: Evolution, Techno and Iconic. My test car was the bigger of two battery sizes; 40kwh and 52kwh versions. The 52kwh a WLTP driving range of up to 410 km and charges from 15% to 80% in just 30 minutes with DC charging, well above the average driving range of most urban users and can be charged anywhere: AC or DC power, a domestic socket, a standard public charging point or a fast-charging point.

That range when working the car on motorways will take a hit and will be more like 340km. That pretty much similar to all electric vehicles and while it may seem a little low, you will get nearer the advertised range with careful urban driving.

However, this little gem demands to be driven and a whole lot of fun can be had from pushing it along and enjoying the handling, particularly on smoother, winding back roads. The steering is precise and accurate, the grip exudes confidence, and the car’s handling is very generally surefooted.

Prices for the Renault 5 start at €25,995 after the SEAI grant and VRT rebate. If you go for the 52kWh battery that will cost you €30,995. My test model has a price tag of €32,995

Following the success of this car, Renault is now turning its attention to another advanced classic by introducing us to a modern version of the Renault 4.

An even more iconic history-maker, it follows similar lines to the 5. It is cut from the same cloth and has a defined link to the iconic legendary model that adorned our roads back in the 60’s. More of that anon!
