There were red faces all round at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) last week over signs with missing apostrophes that made the centre of learning look silly.

Developer BAM, of the new children’s hospital fame, is working on the Dublin Road campus of the former GMIT.

The builders erected signs on campus last week that left egg on the face of the institute, and its teaching staff.

“Empowering tommorrows (sic) learning” read the message on the BAM hoardings.

Embarrassed staff at ATU pointed out that the ‘tomorrow’ referred to was incorrectly spelt. We were reliably informed it should have read “Empowering tomorrow’s learning” – whatever that means!

Mixing up plurals (more than one) and possessives (denoting ownership) is a common mistake in English, in fairness, but not one you’d expect to see emblazoned on signs at an educational institute with the standing of ATU.

“The hoarding was erected by the contractor and they were notified of the error,” a spokesperson for ATU told us last Thursday.

BAM, which was also contacted for comment, had added small apostrophes to correct the signs earlier this week.

Every day is a school day at ATU!
