Immram, a suite of poems by Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill which first appeared in her 1991 collection Feis, and were subsequently set to music by award-winning Clare musician and composer Neil Ó Lochlainn returns to An Taibhdhearc, this Friday, January 30, at 8pm.
The performance will feature Eithne Ní Chatháin (Inni-K) on vocals, Erin Hennessey on fiddle, Eilís Lavelle on harp and Neil Ó Lochlainn on double bass and flute.
This show, which also played at An Taibhdhearc last March, is the result of a 2019 commission by Kerry’s Amergin Solstice Poetry Gathering.
For the commission, Niall combined influences from Irish traditional music and the sean-nós singing, jazz/improvised music and contemporary classical music to create an innovative style of contemporary Irish chamber music. Immram premiered at the Amergin festival in Waterville in 2021.
Composer and musician Neil is co-founder of the critically acclaimed ensemble Ériu, with which he has released three albums and received a TG4 Gradam Ceoil award.
Immram, which roughly translates as ‘Voyage’, is a type of story that was common in Irish mythology. It describes a person’s journey by sea to the otherworld, and the adventures that occur during the voyage.
