Connacht 20
Ulster 22
JOHN FALLON at the Sportsground
THERE are eight games left in the URC campaign, four of them at the Sportsground, and Connacht are just four points outside a Champions Cup spot, but yet it seemed in a way that a big part of the season ended for Andy Friend’s men on Friday night when they were rolled over by an Ulster side who arrived in Galway after a shambolic December.
Two of the away games are against Zebre and Dragons and that should give cause for some optimism but one of the main objectives of the season is to get back into the Champions Cup and that doesn’t look likely now.
Connacht have secured 20 points in ten games this season and probably the best they can hope from for the remainder is 21-22 points, but that’s unlikely to get them much above 11th place.
It’s not just the extra points a win over Ulster on the Friday before Christmas would have garnered, but the momentum could have carried them much further and put them right in contention.
Maybe they will do something special in the RDS on Sunday and beat a Leinster side that have won twelve from twelve this season in the league and Europe, but there was little at the Sportsground on Friday night to suggest that might be on the cards.
