Headford Actors Workshop will be in Druid’s Mick Lally Theatre next Friday and Saturday, February 13 and 14, performing Dylan Thomas’ masterpiece, Under Milkwood.
The play is the story of a day in the life of the small Welsh village of LLareggub. From dreams before dawn to the quiet of night, the audience will encounter a tapestry of unforgettable characters: the gossips, the dreamers, the lovers, and the lonely. All are revealed through Thomas’s extraordinary blend of humour, compassion and musicality of language. A celebration of folly and tenderness, Under Milkwood captures the rhythms of small-town life in a way that is local and universal.
This production was first staged by Headford Actors Workshop during the Something in the Water community arts festival in October, and received an enthusiastic response, selling out both nights, and earning standing ovations.
Theatre has a longstanding tradition in Headford and the relatively recent establishment of Headford Actors Workshop aims to honour that. The group’s mission is simple – to make theatre accessible, meaningful and enjoyable for all its members.
As a not-for-profit community theatre initiative, the workshop offers opportunities for adults of all ages to explore acting, performance and stagecraft in a friendly and creative environment. Members come from diverse backgrounds and range from complete beginners to experienced performers.
Through improvisation, script work, character development and performance training, participants gain valuable theatre skills as well as a strong sense of community and connection – which is one reason why this play resonates so strongly with the cast.
■ Tickets are €20, available online or at the theatre box office.
