Claregalway 1-11
Monivea-Abbey 0-12
Kevin Egan at Tuam Stadium
WITH three rounds of football played in the 2022 Galway SFC, these two clubs are on very different trajectories. Consecutive victories have pushed Claregalway right into contention for a quarter-final slot, and with tilts at the two teams ahead of them in the Group Three table still to come, top spot and automatic seeding is within the grasp of the club.
Meanwhile Monivea-Abbey are headed for what looks like one big relegation showdown with Killanin, and potentially further tough contests in the battle to avoid dropping to intermediate level. With that in mind, they need to find some form quickly after losing three games on the bounce.
Despite this, there was nothing to call between these two teams on Sunday afternoon in Tuam Stadium, other than a little bit more attacking composure close to the opposition goal. In Nathan Grainger, Claregalway had an inside forward who wanted the ball, and knew exactly what to do with it when it came his way.
When it came to his first half goal, the score that ultimately settled this contest, it would be easy to pick out Derry Ahern’s immaculate 40-metre pass as the moment when it all opened up for the Galway U20 forward. Yet the coolness Grainger showed when presented with his chance was crucial, and contrasted sharply with the rashness that seemed to be pervasive when it came to other attackers trying to find the net, particularly on the Monivea-Abbey side.
