Galway 4-8
Leitrim 1-13
Ivan Smyth At Tuam Stadium
GALWAY minor footballers secured their fourth consecutive win at Tuam Stadium on Friday evening but only after seeing an 11 point lead whittled down to the minimum before edging through.
The hosts looked destined for a routine win over a Leitrim side that had shown little to trouble Galway in the opening three quarters of this clash. With Galway ahead 3-8 to 0-6 after 44 minutes, this game appeared to be meandering along to its inevitable conclusion as both sides emptied their respective benches.
Leitrim had other ideas though as they kicked 1-7 without reply to slash their deficit to just a point with only two minutes of injury time remaining. Paul Honeyman, who finished the day with 1-6 for Leitrim, buried to the net in the 61st minute with the Leitrim faithful believing they could secure a share of the spoils or even better.
Galway kept their composure as Olan Kelly claimed a short kickout before feeding Ross Coen. The centre back surged upfield before offloading to Charlie Cox. The corner forward found Mikey Mulryan who blasted to the net from close range as Galway secured a four point win. Galway were laboured for much of the second half with their final quarter performance leaving supporters in Tuam bemused.
Team manager Alan Glynn was pleased with his team’s fourth goal but frustrated with how his side took their foot off the accelerator: “It was a really good goal from us. A lovely piece of play to get the goal after they got the goal against us. The disappointing thing for us is that we couldn’t do that consistently in the second half.
