Relationship breakdown is heaping more misery on people waiting years on the city’s housing list.
And a former mayor has said that it was “extremely sad” to see adults in their 50s having to move home to live with their parents because there was not enough affordable housing to rent in Galway.
Galway City Councillor Niall McNelis (Lab) said the housing disaster remained the biggest issue facing society, as City Hall’s Housing Department and local housing charities are inundated with requests for homes.
“One guy I know was nearly 15 years on the housing list, and he’s now gone backwards because he no longer has a partner. The two of them were on the housing list together, they split up and now they’re being treated as individuals.
“The partner, with children, remains on the list. The man who left, doesn’t get credits for time served. A lot of people are under so much pressure, their relationships are breaking up. But that can make their (housing) situation worse,” Cllr McNelis said.
There are more than 4,000 people on the city’s social housing waiting list and many are adults forced back into their parents’ homes.
