THE Independent TD and turfcutting representative, Michael Fitzmaurice, has said that he is not overly-concerned as regards new restrictions to be introduced curtailing the advertisement of turf for sale.

The Roscommon-Galway TD told the Farming Tribune that earlier this year when his whole issue blew about turfcutting, the absolute priority was to ensure that people who owned turf-banks or who had turbary rights could continue to cut their banks.

“I would be getting too hung up about restrictions as regards the advertising of turf. What has been safeguarded after a lot of discussion and debate is the right of people with turf-banks to cut, sell or gift turf as they see fit.

“A lot of turf sales in the West of Ireland are quite small-scale and are usually carried out on a word-of-mouth basis and between relatives and neigbhours. Online advertising restrictions won’t bother most people with turf-banks,” said Deputy Fitzmaurice.
