An Taisce has called for the city’s Heritage Officer to compile a report before City Hall signs off on changes to one of Galway’s famous pubs.
The Galway Branch of the national trust has written to Galway City Council about a planning application from Tatuape Limited, the new owners of Murphy’s Bar on High Street.
An Taisce described it as a “well-known, well-run superior example of Galway’s many Guinness-serving public houses” and for almost 90 years it was in the Murphy family.
It was noted for “the quality of its smooth pint and friendliness of its owner and staff” it said.
An Taisce said that No 9 High Street was a protected structure and a listed building, located within an Architectural Conservation Area within the Galway Walled Town.
The new owners sought planning permission for the retention and completion of “internal alterations to the existing public house, including changes to the existing front doors, relocation of an internal stairs at ground and basement levels, and fire safety upgrade works to the existing ceilings and walls at ground and basement levels, including ancillary and associated services”.
