Award-winning Canadian folk trio Genticorum will play the Station House Theatre in Clifden next Tuesday, May 13, as part of an Irish tour co-ordinated by Music Network.
Described as ‘one of the most sought-after exponents of Québecois musical culture’ by BBC Radio 2, the three play melodic combinations of fiddle, flute and accordion, supported by energetic foot percussion and powerful guitar playing. And, according to Roots World, their vocal harmonies reinforce their status as ‘one of the tightest units on the planet’.
Founders Pascal Gemme (fiddle, mandolin, foot percussion) and Yann Falquet (guitar, jaw harp), who have been performing together for decades, have also been also individually recognised for their contributions to music. In 2015, they were joined by multi-instrumentalist and composer Nicholas Williams who plays flute and accordion with the group.
For the past 24 years, Genticorum has forged a reputation for its folk, traditional and Celtic music, releasing six albums and four EPs, which have received critical acclaim in Canada and abroad.
The group has performed internationally at festivals including Scotland’s Celtic Connections, Denmark’s Tonder Folk Festival, Estonia’s Vijlandi Folk Festival, Mexico’s International Festival of Chihuahua and Egypt’s Independent Music Festival of Alexandria.
Genticorum’s sound has been described by The Living Tradition as having ‘a rightful place amongst the new generation of internationally recognised Québecois bands’.
This tour, being presented in association with Baltimore Fiddle Fair and Moving on Music, tour runs until May 18 and also includes Dublin, Cork, Kerry, Sligo, Donegal, Derry, Armagh and Belfast.
Next Tuesday’s concert at the Station House is being hosted by Clifden Arts Society. It starts at 8pm and tickets are available on the door.
