British-Irish composer and multi-instrumentalist Girish Paul will perform a special concert with his virtual orchestra to mark the release of his new album, The Diary of Anne Frank: Her Journey in Music. It will take place in Oughterard Community Centre on Saturday, July 1 at 8pm. The production has received the backing of the Anne Frank Fonds Foundation in Switzerland, which was set up by Anne’s father, Otto Frank, after World War Two.
Known for spectacular solo concerts that combine theatre, acting, film and music, Girish single-handedly performs the heartwarming score on several instruments, backed by his famous virtual orchestra. Using dramatic visuals, the concert tells the story of Anne Frank between 1942 and 1944. There are filmed re-enactments of scenes in Anne’s life, performed by talented Irish actors, which cover her happy schooldays in Frankfurt and her life in the family’s secret hiding place in Amsterdam as the Nazis closed in.
“Executive Producer Carmel Barrett and I are thrilled to be bringing this powerful story to Oughterard. It’s as relevant as ever now that war has sadly returned to Europe,” says Girish.
He explains that, back in 1991, when he was working as a teacher in the Middle East, he and his students came under Scud missile attack as Operation Desert Storm, the largest military conflict since World War II, got underway.
“We were all fearful, with thoughts of never seeing our loved one again, but I was determined to ensure that my students got on with learning in spite of the Gulf War that raged around us for five long months.”
