UG Maree take top seeding after bad-tempered win

University of Galway Maree secured top-seeding for the post-season play-offs as a dominant final quarter saw them swat side the challenge of UCC Demons in a game that came close to being abandoned by the officials due to the abusive behaviour of some of the visiting fans, with one person linked to the Cork club having to be ejected from the venue before the referees would allow the game to continue.

There was far less drama in the other senior league games involving Galway sides, with Maigh Cuilinn losing to Killorglin in Kerry to send them into a relegation play-off final in Dublin this coming Sunday; while Universe of Galway Mystics waved goodbye to the Super League with a win over Ulster University Elks.

There was good news for two of sides in cup action last week, with Claregalway advancing to the final of the Women’s national League thanks to a win over Tipperary Knights; while Titans are through to the semi-finals of the Men’s U-20 National League thanks to a 90-68 win over Limerick Celtics.

MEN’S SUPER LEAGUE

UG Maree  87

UCC Demons  71

UG Maree finished top of the regular season league table after the blew conference rivals UCC Demons away with a stunning fourth quarter performance to end the visitors’ 10-game winning run.

Demons had won the meeting between the side sin Cork back in October, which meant that if they won again in Oranmore on Saturday, they would finish ahead of UG Maree in the final table by virtue of a better head-to-head record

That added a bit of an edge to the game that wasn’t needed, as did the failure – intentional or otherwise – of the visitors to fist-bump with their hosts before the game.
