Small is beautiful as things all fall into the right place

Groove Tube with Cian O’Connell

The third weekend of September marked the second edition of Strange Brew’s Fall Right into Place at Claregalway Castle – but in all honesty, this year’s festival was a different beast. With no Covid restrictions to dampen the atmosphere or impact event preparations, it was a weekend full of life and heart – a fitting end to a powerful summer calendar for Galway music.

Acts were divided among the Castle’s courtyard and the Róisín Dubh stage, with crowds filtering through the food and drink stalls between both venues. Local restaurants Ember and Weirdough provided kebabs and pizzas, and Galway Bay Brewery, accompanied by giant inflatable cans, offered craft beers and cider.

Buses departed from the cathedral around 4.30pm on Friday for as Galway-centric a line-up as the festival could have produced.

It began in the Róisín’s tent with Bríd Kenny & the Noise, whose sound has grown more experimental over the past year. The four-piece have played headline shows in Dublin, Limerick and Galway – where they are becoming one of the city’s most prolific live acts. It has paid dividends in their performances. A project that began in a more ambient folk style now incorporates elements of funk, rock and jazz to great effect.
