An early frontrunner for this year’s Choice Music Prize Album of the Year is soon to arrive in the form of Sorcha Richardson’s Smiling Like an Idiot. The Dublin-based singer/songwriter received huge acclaim for 2019’s First Prize Bravery, and its follow-up record demonstrates a level of composure and ambition that has been developing in the covid-stunted interim.
This LP boasts all of the life experience and sentiment that makes debuts so endearing, but with the layers that make up its texture and atmosphere, it represents real progress in Sorcha’s songwriting.
Much of that is owed to the pace at which Smiling Like an Idiot was made. Though the pandemic robbed her of a series of major tour dates in the aftermath of her first album, Sorcha revelled in the time she had to devote to her creative routine.
Every decision was granted appropriate care and the process of writing and releasing music was compartmentalised to a manageable degree.
“I know people always talk about the difficult second album and things like that, but I’ve found this one quite enjoyable to make,” Sorcha admits.
“Easy would be the wrong word because it’s not easy at all but I like making music when I don’t have any distractions. That’s what I was able to do with this one. I would just wake up every day… I had a little makeshift studio set up in my grandparents’ house where I was living at the time, and I just worked away in that front room every day for six months. That made it much easier for me because I didn’t feel under time pressure.
