Step forward for plans for new community centre in Moycullen

This article first appeared on Galway Bay FM

There’s been a significant step foward in plans for a long-awaited new community centre in Moycullen.

A contractor is now being sought to build the sports, social and events centre at Kilrainey Woods.

Thanks to a national allocation of €6m last year, the project is now 95 percent funded – with the remainder to come from local fundraising.

The campaign for the centre dates back three decades – and they’re hoping it’ll be completed and ready for use by the end of 2026.

Indications plug to be pulled on Carna Bay Hotel as IPAS centre

This article first appeared on Galway Bay FM

There are strong indications that International Protection Applicants will not be located at the Carna Bay Hotel in west Connemara.

A campaign for the return of the hotel to normal community and tourism purposes had been organised in Carna and the decision regarding the International Protection Applicants was postponed until June.

But a statement abandoning the plan is expected from the Department of Justice as early as today.

The speculation that International Protection Applicants will not be based in Carna has been fuelled by an advertisement which offers Air B and B accommodation in 12 rooms in the Carna Bay Hotel.

There are 26 rooms in the Hotel and the remainder outside of the Air B and B would be taken up by Ukranian refugees.

The owner has a contract to house those refugees until August.

A statement confirming the end of the Protection Applicants plan is is expected as early as today.

A campaign which included a 24 hour watch and the placing of observers at the various crossroads towards Carna was mounted in March. This was stood down when a June deadline was given.

The organisers stated that they wanted the hotel returned to its former status as a facility for the locality and for tourists.

It appears now that the owner’s immediate intent is to cater for Air B and B customers.

Whistleblower midwife calls on Minister to sort out maternity safety

A whistleblower has appealed to the new Minister for Health to meet to discuss allegations of unsafe practices at the Maternity Department of University Hospital Galway (UHG).

The midwife wrote to Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill to convey “deep concerns” about UHG’s Maternity Department, which she highlighted in several protected disclosures since 2018.

The protected disclosures alleged behaviour and practices at UHG that “jeopardise the health and safety of pregnant women”.

“Unfortunately, instead of addressing these serious concerns, I have faced repeated penalties, investigations and the production of false evidence and defamation,” the minister was told.

“This treatment has not only affected my professional life but has also taken a significant toll on my mental health. I am currently under psychiatric care due to the bullying and ostracism I have endured,” she said.

The midwife had contacted both Stephen Donnelly and Simon Harris when they were Ministers for Health in previous Governments.

It’s understood Bernard Gloster, head of the HSE, was made aware of the protected disclosures and alleged bullying.

In her latest appeal to Minister for Health, the midwife asked Jennifer Carroll MacNeill to meet with her.

“It is crucial for me to discuss not only the contents of my protected disclosure but also the broader implications of an unsafe environment for pregnant women and the pervasive culture of bullying within our healthcare system,” she said.
