1923 – Servant problem

The servant problem has been and is worrying a number of householders. Irish labour Exchanges in conjunction with local technical schools have endeavoured to solve the problem by training unemployed women.

The day course of three months established by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce at Galway Technical Institute is drawing to a close, and it is expected that as a result a number of general maids, kitchen maids and “between” maids, who have had a full course of instruction in cookery, housewifery, laundry and needlework, will soon be available for indoor domestic service.

It will be refreshing news to harassed householders to learn that na inspector who recently visited the Galway classes for domestic servants pronounced them as amongst the best in Ireland. The course of training has, we are assured, been thoroughly practical; the girls have been brightened up generally, taught the general principles and practice of the work they will be set to do; and there is no reason why they should not gain good and permanent positions in comfortable homes.
