Feisteas an tSaoil/ Dressing the Part will be staged at An Taibhdhearc Theatre this Friday and Saturday, May 5 and 6, at 8.30pm nightly as part of the Galway Theatre Festival.

This bilingual, one-woman show, written and performed by poet and actor Áine Moynihan, celebrates women’s lives through the social changes of the 20th century and into the 21st.

Original in concept and theme, Feisteas an tSaoil is the voice of an older female artist, who has been working on the Western seaboard for many years, in the Irish language. It’s a voice that is rarely heard.

The piece deals with personal stories of birth and death, marriage and breaking taboos, in a society best known for silences. Tracing key moments of schooling, courtship, marriage and giving birth, the tale unfolds in prose and poetry as it strengthens the presence of Irish language theatre in Galway and the West of Ireland.

Written and performed by Áine Moynihan, with live music from Feargal Mac Amhlaoibh and Louise Foxe, it is being presented by the Irish language collective Giorria Theatre.

This is a brave new work from Áine Moynihan, who in addition to her own writing and acting is the founder and Artistic Director of AnnÓg – Amharclann na nÓg, in Corca Dhuibhne.

Her stories in this piece are underscored by musical fragments and airs played on piano and on fiddle from the islands of Cape Clear, Inis Oírr and West Kerry.
