(After extra time)
Corofin win 4-2 on penalties
By Ivan Smyth at Tuam Stadium
COROFIN retained their Division One league title as they came through a gruelling battle at Tuam Stadium on Friday evening.
Tuam will be left with regrets as they frustrated Corofin for large periods and even had a shot at winning this game with the final kick of extra time. In a frantic finale, Tuam sub Cillian Reidy was hauled down roughly 35m out from goal.
Brian Mannion would have fancied his chances in normal circumstances. On this occasion however, he saw his left footed effort fly wide with this miss ensuring penalties would be needed to separate the sides.
Jamie Murphy and Mannion converted their spot kicks but Jack Davin was denied by Bernard Power while 126 minutes after the whistle to begin the game, Rory O’Connor’s effort went wide of the mark to seal Tuam’s fate. Gary Sice, Rory Donnellan, Kieran Molloy and Dylan Canney all found the target for Corofin as they became the first side to win a Division One league title on penalties.
The victory ensures Corofin pick up their 19th title and move further ahead at the top of the roll of honour. The defeat means Tuam have won just one Division 1 league title since 1980, the most recent coming four years ago. Kevin Reidy’s side were unable to kick on after leading 2-3 to 0-6 at half time. Tuam only scored four points in a little over 50 minutes of football from there until the end of extra time.
