Are you ‘the picture of health’ in advance of Father’s Day?

Health, Beauty and Lifestyle with Denise McNamara

This week is Men’s Health Week, climaxing on Father’s Day this Sunday. The theme for 2023 of the global initiative is ‘The Picture of Health’ – organisers are asking men and those who support them about what that looks like to them personally. Research shows that men experience a disproportionate burden of ill-health and die too young; much younger than women.

The reason for this is that males have higher death rates than females for almost all of the leading causes of death and at all ages.

They also have poorer lifestyles that are responsible for a high proportion of chronic diseases.

Late presentation to health services can lead to a large number of problems becoming untreatable.

It is estimated that one in two men will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives – a higher proportion than women.

And smoking is the biggest cause of avoidable death amongst men on the island of Ireland.

Dr Noel Richardson, a senior lecturer and director of healthcare at IT Carlow, said the aim of Men’s Health Week is to heighten awareness of preventable health problems for males of all ages, support men and boys to engage in healthier lifestyle choices and activities and encourage the early detection and treatment of health difficulties in males.
