Galway United 2
Shelbourne 0
DESPITE World Cup bound Niamh Fahey and Heather Payne being among the attendance at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday evening, they didn’t take all the headlines as Galway United women’s team grabbed some of the limelight by advancing to the semi-finals of the All Island Cup with an impressive win over Shelbourne.
Having previously beaten Lingfield by 1-0 away and played out a home scoreless draw with Athlone Town, United knew a win on this occasion would see them top the group and advance to the last four. Joint leaders alongside Shelbourne going into this contest, it was a winners-take-all scenario and goals late in each half was enough to secure a home victory.
It was the third meeting of the season between the sides, with the earlier league games won on both occasions by the Dublin outfit. Phil Trill made three changes in personnel to the side that faced Athlone the previous week – Jessica Berlin returned to goal in place of Abbigale Ronayne, while Aoibheann Costello and Eve Dossen lined out in defence instead of Kate Thompson and Jodie Griffin.
Chances were in short supply for the most part. Gemma McGuinness and Christie Gray went closest to a breakthrough at either end in the opening half. However, it was the visitors who threatened to open the scoring on a number of occasions as Smyth-Lynch, Healy and Hamric all went close.
