The cost to the city of installing two ‘parklets’ was €153,000 so far – and counting.
Overall costs of commissioning the street furniture, at Middle Street and Dominick Street, will be just shy of €250,000 when all creditors are paid, according to documents released to Galway City Tribune.
Copies of invoices, obtained by this newspaper under Freedom of Information (FOI), reveal that some €153,800 has been paid by Galway City Council to private businesses for goods and services related to the controversial infrastructure, which was rolled-out last March.
Invoices worth around €80,000 hadn’t been submitted during the period of the FOI but when included, the overall price tag of the project swells to around a quarter of a million euro.
The parklets were due to be installed in Summer 2020 but were delayed by over two years. They have had mixed reviews from the public, with many negative comments about their appearance and usefulness posted on social media.
Cllr Eddie Hoare (FG), who is now mayor, and Senator Pauline O’Reilly (Green), were among the local politicians who welcomed the parklets.
The cost of these parklets had not been made public until now.
