ALL four Galway sides were in national league action last weekend on the first full round of games of the new season, and it ended in disappointment as all four suffered defeat of various magnitudes.
Maree finished top of the table at the end of the regular schedule in the 2022/23 season, but that was just a distant memory on Saturday as they somehow contrived to blow a 26-point lead to lose by a point to Ulster University in the Sports Arena at the University of Galway.
Men’s Super League rivals Maigh Cuilinn struggled on offence for much of last season, and those old failings came back to haunt them again down in Kerry on Saturday as they slipped to a 25-points defeat to Tralee Warriors.
The University of Galway Mystics were seriously depleted for their trip to Cork last Sunday to take on Brunell in the Women’s Super League, with just eight players named on the match-day squad for what turned out to be a 38-point hammering.
Things were a little closer in Knocknacarra on Saturday as Titans took on Limerick Sport Eagles on the opening weekend of the Men’s Division 1 season, but despite a 33-point haul from Joseph Coughlan, the home side still fell to an 18-point defeat.
