From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Plans to run a road through a small green area in a Galway City estate have been met with strong resistance from residents.
In the Draft City Development Plan, councillors backed a proposal to allow a road to be constructed in the green area to the front of Sandyvale on the Headford Road – a move that will “destroy the quality of life of residents”.
A new group, ‘Save the Sandyvale Green’, has been established with the support of Terryland Forest Park Alliance, to resist the move which seeks to provide relief for a family living at the recently-upgraded Kirwan Junction who have reported difficulty accessing their property as a result of the changed junction layout.
Brendan Smith of the Save the Sandyvale Green action group said it was hard to comprehend why the quality of life of approximately 300 residents in the estate was being sacrificed to allow access to one house outside the estate.
“This house already has direct access from the new junction facilitated by a filter light that cause no delays for the few cars that enter the property,” he said.
Mr Smith said locals were coming together to ask councillors to remove the material alteration inserted in the draft development plan for which the public consultation period was due to end this week.
