Meat and Salt, Marina Carr’s fairy tale theatre show for families, is Galway Youth Theatre’s production for this year’s Galway International Arts Festival.
Based on Shakespeare’s King Lear, the story of a king who cannot discern which of his daughters truly loves him, Meat and Salt tells of what happens when scrupulously honest Little Daughter tells tyrannical Big Daddy that she loves him in the way meat loves salt.
For her honesty, Little Daughter is banished from Big Daddy’s kingdom. Eventually, she arrives at the Mountains of the Moon Hounds and, after many adventures, meets the Young King who falls in love with her honesty. They agree to marry and Big Daddy is invited to the feast, where a surprise will be waiting for him on the big day.
Directed by GYT’s director Andrew Flynn, Meat and Salt will be staged in Galway Arts Centre’s Nuns’ Island Theatre from Monday, July 17, to Friday, July 30, at 5pm daily (there’ s no show on Sunday, July 23). The play, which runs for about an hour, is suitable for all ages.
Tickets are €12/14 and are available from https://giaf.ie.
