A livestream of the Mayor’s Awards, hosted this year by Mayor of Galway City, Clodagh Higgins (FG), was broadcast on YouTube.
It was also live-Tweeted from Galway City Council’s Twitter account.
This meant that anyone who could not go to the Galway Bay Hotel for the awards ceremony could watch it online on social media. Fair play to whoever at City Hall showed the initiative to make it accessible.
Isn’t it amazing what can be done when you put your mind to it?
Now, what hope that the local authority will use this positive experience of livestreaming to broadcast Galway City Council’s ordinary monthly meetings from now on?
Why any member of the public would want to watch them is another matter. But the Mayor’s Awards proved it could be done.
And it would shed light on the workings of city councillors, and management at City Hall, which on balance would be positive for local democracy.
