Another major setback for Galway City flood relief scheme Another major setback for Galway City flood relief scheme

Galway City’s flood relief scheme has suffered another major setback after it was confirmed lodgement of a planning application has been delayed by three years at least.

The ‘Corrib go Cósta’ project, to protect Galway against one in 200-year coastal floods and one in 100-year river floods, will not be ready to go to planning until 2027.

The original timeframe was that a planning application would be lodged this year, with construction to start in 2026 if planning hurdles were jumped.

But city councillors were briefed on Wednesday that it would be 2027 at the earliest before consultants Arup will be ready to lodge an application.

Councillor John Connolly (FF) described the setback as “bleak news”.

“It is awfully deflating. The fear is this is going to be never-ending,” said Cllr Connolly.
