World champion takes to the Comedy stage

Published

on

Judah Friedlander...Galway-bound.

Small screen fans will know him as Frank Rossitano from the Emmy Award-winning 30 Rock and he’s also familiar from Meet the Parents, Zoolander and the Wrestler – but on the comedy stage, Judah Friedlander is simply the World Champion.

And that makes it fitting that he’s among the stars at the Opening Gala of this year’s Galway Comedy Festival, when it opens in the The Spiegeltent Paradiso on Thursday, October 16, alongside Colin Murphy, Terry Alderton, Benny Boot, Al Porter and Bernard O’Shea.

Even though Judah has made over 30 movies and appeared in hundreds of TV shows, stand-up comedy is Judah’s priority and specialty.

He is not an actor who does stand-up on the side – he’s more of a stand-up comedian who acts on the side. He always has new material and plays off the audience so he never does the same show twice.

As ‘The World Champion’ of everything, he is the best athlete in the world, greatest martial artist, the sexual desire of every woman, and a role model to children – arguably the greatest comedian in the world…..and the most humble.

If you miss Judah Friedlander on the Opening Gala Night, he will also be at the Róisín Dubh with Benny Boot and Steve Bennett on Friday, October 17.

One of the star turns of this year’s festival doesn’t have far to travel at all to take part – but what Tommy Tiernan saves in travel, he makes up for in energy.

He is back with a brand new show ‘Out Of The Whirlwind’ for the Vodafone Comedy Carnival – again at the Spiegeltent Paradiso on Friday October, Saturday and Sunday, October 17, 18 and 19.  And he’s selling out fast.

RTE will air a new documentary on Tommy’s recent European tour, ‘Tommy: To Tell You The Truth’ next week following his ‘Open Mouth’ performances.

There will be one performance of his improvised ‘Open Mouth’ in Galway – at the Roisin Dubh on Thursday, October 17 – and it too is almost sold out.

His recent tour of Europe included Finland, France, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and Estonia and he is about to embark on UK tour dates this autumn.

Into the Dark Woods

Blue Teapot at the Black Box

REVIEW BY JUDY MURPHY

After several false dawns, Blue Teapot Theatre Company finally got to stage its long-awaited drama, Into the Dark Woods, in the city’s Black Box Theatre last week. A Galway 2020 commission, and written by company member Charlene Kelly, it was originally meant to be presented more than two years ago.

Blue Teapot is made up of actors with intellectual disabilities and Charlene is one of its best-known performers, but this marked her first foray into writing, supported by dramaturg Eileen Gibbons. The production, directed by the company’s Artistic Director Petal Pilley, has done her proud.

It’s a short, moving, sometimes humorous piece about two young people with intellectual disabilities from very different backgrounds, who get lost in the woods where they are confronted by various demons and monsters.

Jennifer Cox plays Sharon whose grandmother (Mary Monaghan-McHugh) has taught her to be independent and outward looking, while Kieran Coppinger is a prince who has been cocooned in a nearby castle by his father (Midie Corcoran), a king who feels his son isn’t capable of inheriting the throne.

Busy times as Music for Galway embraces the familiar and new

Alexander Sitkovetsky, whose uncle Dmitri created the arrangement for strings of Bach's Goldberg Variations that will be performed in Galway City and Portumna next week.

Music for Galway has a busy couple of weeks in store, which includes a visit by the National  Symphony Orchestra to Leisureland on Thursday, October 6.

First up is a new initiative, the Galway Encore, which will take place next Thursday in Galway City and Friday in Portumna, when violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky, violin and viola player Sergey Malov and cellist Natalie Clein join forces to perform the string trio arrangement of Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

That’s scheduled for Thursday, September 29, at 8pm at University of Galway’ s Emily Anderson Concert Hall and in Christ Church in Portumna on Friday, September 30, also at 8pm. And, as part of MfG’s plan to bring more work to the county, Sergey Malov will visit Tuam’s Mall Theatre on Wednesday, inviting some 400 children in to Meet the Violins.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations were originally composed for harpsichord, reportedly to soothe an insomniac nobleman.  The work has reached new audiences in modern times, thanks to piano performances by artists such as Glenn Gould. And it became infamous as one of Hannibal Lecter’s favourite pieces in The Silence of the Lambs.

Cosán na Naomh at Stiúideo Cuan

Composer and musician Máire Breatnach, whose new work will be performed in An Spidéal next week.

Cosán na Naomh, a new work by renowned musician and composer, Máire Breatnach, will have its world premiere in Stiúideo Cuan, An Spidéal, from next Tuesday, September 27, to Saturday, October 1 at 8.30pm.

The piece, commissioned by Stiúideo Cuan, will be performed by piper Mick O’Brien, harper Noreen O’Donoghue and Máire herself on fiddle and viola, with sound design by Stephen O’Brien.

Cosán na Naomh is inspired by The Saints’ Path – an 18km pilgrim route through the West Kerry peninsula of Corca Dhuibhne; beginning at Ventry Beach and rising to the top of Mount Brandon. According to folklore, Ventry Beach was the scene of a 17-day battle, Cath Fionntrá, between the legendary Fianna, led by Fionn Mac Cumhaill, and Daire Donn, the powerful King of the world.

Máire’s composition follows the success of a similar project last year, explains the studio’s creative director, Darach Mac Con Iomaire.
