The Galway Races Festival has been dealt a blow today with news that William Hill bookmakers will not sponsor the Galway Plate next year.
The company has been sponsoring the primary race at the annual Summer Festival since 2006.
Director of Racing at William Hill, David Hood, says it “hasn’t been a decision taken lightly”.
He says the decision to not sponsor the Galway plate next year is based purely on the economic environment and the various trading restrictions on bookmakers.
Manager of Galway Racecourse, John Maloney, says they are grateful to William Hill for offering such an attractive prize of 250 thousand euro for the Plate in previous years.
