Anne Gildea’s latest comedy show, Further Adventures in Womaning, will be in the city’s Town Hall Theatre next Friday December 5, and she’s promising “a laugh-a-second look at the changing world of Irish womanhood since the 1970s”, as she explores “the women our mothers were, the girls we used to be, and the women we have become”.
Further Adventures in Womaning follows Anne’s previous show How To Get The Menopause & Enjoy It, which the Irish Independent described as ‘hilarious. . . utterly punk’. That toured for three years to great acclaim and included a 35-date UK-wide theatre tour with menopause expert, Dr Louise Newson, in Autumn 2024.
In her latest work, seasoned comedian, Anne sets out to “tell it as it is”. From 18-hour girdles and Housewives of The Year to twerky dancers and Insta influencers, and more, she brings her audience through a tumultuous half century of “womany stuff”.
Born in London, reared on a farm in Sligo and a longtime resident of Dublin, Ann was a founding member of the iconic Irish musical-comedy trio, The Nualas who were on the road from 1995-2002 and again from 2011-2018.
Their brand of catchy self-penned songs and provocative chats about contemporary life proved to be a huge success, leading to tours at home and worldwide, including performing at The Royal Albert Hall, London, and having a seven-week run at The Irish Arts Center, New York, as well as several appearances at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. They also featured regularly on TV and radio in Ireland and elsewhere.
Anne, who started her comedy career in London in the late 1980s, is also an author. Her last book, I’ve got Cancer What’s Your Excuse?, about her treatment for Stage 3 breast cancer, inspired the Irish feature, The Bright Side which was released in cinemas in 2021 and also streamed on Prime.
She’s visiting Galway as part of a tour of Further Adventures in Womaning. Her show at the Town Hall Theatre next Friday night, December 5, will start at 8pm, and tickets at €24, are available from tht.ie, 091-569777 or from the box office.
