Wettest October since 1995 leaves us with swollen rivers and waterlogged countryside

GALWAY experienced its wettest October in 27-years with the rainfall figure for the county coming in at around the eight inches mark.

Ground conditions which had been good at the beginning of our 10th month have deteriorated significantly with many farmers now having stock housed.

Met Éireann have described ground conditions across the country as either ‘saturated or waterlogged’ following the October downpours.

Abbeyknockmoy weather recorder Brendan Geraghty told the Farming Tribune that his rainfall reading for the month came in at 7.75 inches (nearly 197mms) with the first and last weeks of the month being particularly wet.

Up until October, last February – on 6.43 inches (163mms) – had been the wettest month of the year on Brendan Geraghty’s gauge.

“Even though we got just over four inches of rain in September, the ground was still dry after our good Summer. Even through early October, ground conditions were still reasonably okay, but all that has changed over the past couple of weeks.

“No one needs any reminding about ground conditions – all you have to do is to look out at the rivers, streams or fields to see how wet everywhere is.

“The grass is still continuing to grow with the ongoing spell of very mild weather, but most farmers have had little option over the past couple of weeks but to house stock for the Winter,” said Brendan Geraghty.
