West United needed a pick-me-up when they faced Corrib Celtic on Sunday morning at South Park as they went into the game at the foot of the table, with just one point and one goal to show from their first five matches.
Good things come to those who wait, and so it was for the city club as they ran out convincing 4-1 winners against the side that was just one spot above them in the table to move above both Celtic, and Renmore, and give life a rosier outlook.
It was against the Annaghdown side that West took the bare look off their profile earlier in the season, the sides playing out a 1-1 draw when the sides met in Annaghdown back on the second weekend in September in the second round of games.
Sunday’s game was a bit of a slow burner before the home side took the lead when newcomer Ibon Errasti headed in a Ryan Folan corner. It was the visitors who were offering the greater scoring threat in the opening half, but they spurned a number of opportunities.
However, they were handed a way back into the game when Cian O’Toole was fouled in the box by Colm Power and from the resulting spot-kick, Shane Concanon tied up matters at 1-1.
West were strengthened by the return of Denis Lydon and Philip Ryan as both returned from long-term injuries: apart from their performance, they also add experience and a defensive prowess lacking in the early months of the season.
West certainly pushed on in the second-half and with Folan, Eamonn Brannigan, and Conall Doyle having a greater influence, they scored more goals in 45 minutes than they had in the previous 450 minutes.
