Upper Salthill is an illegal parking blackspot where more fines have been issued than on any other street in the city so far this year.

A total of 259 Fixed Charge Penalty Notices were issued in the first six months of 2023 to motorists parked illegally on Salthill Road Upper – which runs from the junction at Kelleher’s Garage to past Blackrock.

This included 179 for parking on double yellow lines, and 80 for parking on footpaths.

Galway City Council community wardens issued a further 92 fines for illegal parking at Salthill Road Lower. This included 72 for parking on footpaths and 22 for double yellow line offences.

The next biggest illegal parking blackspot in the city was at Newcastle Road, where a total of 100 fines were issued for parking on the footpath.

The illegal parking ‘hot spots’ were revealed by the local authority in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

Eoin Ryan of Salthill Cyclebus, who submitted the FOI query, said the data showed that not one fine was issued in Galway City since 2010 for a motorist parking in a cycle lane.
