VW ploughs a new field

The new-look Volkswagen Caddy.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles chose this week’s National Ploughing Championship as the ideal location to launch the sixth generation of the Transporter and the fourth generation of the Caddy vans.

Both are trend setters in their respective category and with the current rise in the sales of commercial vehicles, both are well placed to command an even better future over the coming years.

All the talk at the ploughing was the massive upgrade in the interiors of both vans. The layout, design and the comfort are now equal to what you would expect to find in any Volkswagen passenger car.

It is clear that Volkswagen has embraced the needs of the long distant van driver who may spend most of their working day behind the wheel and deserve the same wellbeing that you get from a car and, if you by the higher grade, you are getting buckets of that comfort.

Indeed, for the first time Volkswagen will offer a Highline model in the Transporter range. That adds more to the already well-specified lower grades and all vans are available with 4-Motion four-wheel drive and automatic DSG gearboxes. You also get Bluetooth, Stop-start and Cruise control in all versions. Caravelle, Shuttle and the California versions will also be launched in Ireland.

The Caddy is smaller but equally adapt for the work it may be required to do with similar features to the Transporter. It will be available, for the first time with an all-steel tailgate and no extra cost and will also come with optional 4-Motion and DSG gearbox.

“The launch of our New Transporter Generation 6 and Caddy Generation 4 in the Irish Market is a huge event in our brand’s history,” said Alan Bateson, Managing Director, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland.

“With over 65 years of delivering Commercial Vehicles to Irish customers, these new generations must set new benchmarks in the Irish Market and I am certain they will. We have improved the class leading design characteristics of both models and have worked hard to improve all aspects of both vehicles in terms of efficiency, comfort and specification,” he said.

Prices for the Transporter start at €19,997 excluding VAT while the Caddy starts at €13,606 ex VAT.  Both are set to raise the bar in their segments. Already the Caddy is the best selling van in its segment and the Transporter, according to figures presented by Volkswagen has consistently set the benchmark for quality, practicality, residual value performance and low running costs in its class.

Breathe easy in new Volvo

The Volvo S60, which features the new air technology.

Volvo has introduced new premium air-quality technology in its cars, allowing Volvo drivers to breathe clean and healthy air inside their cars and it can even clean the air inside the cabin ahead of their journey.

The company’s world-first Advanced Air Cleaner technology comes with a sensor that measures PM 2.5 levels inside the cabin, creating a feature not available in any other car currently on the market. Now Volvo drivers can also compare air quality inside the cabin to that outside the car.

PM 2.5 is a widely used measure for air quality by measuring the amount of fine particulate matter in the air. Globally, many urban areas suffer from PM 2.5 values that exceed recommended levels by the World Health Organisation, underlining the need to minimise their impact.

This new technology is now available in all 60 and 90 series Volvo models since this Spring. The Advanced Air Cleaner cleans out fine particulate matter from the cabin and thanks to a synthetic fibre-based filter and ionisation, up to 95% of all PM 2.5 particles are kept out of the cabin.

This optimises air quality inside the car, limiting the adverse health effects that are associated with air pollution and fine particulates. Cleaner air inside the car also helps to advance safe driving, since healthy and fresh air can help boost driver concentration.

Citroën C4

Citroen Ireland recently revealed details of their new 10th generation compact hatchback, the Citroën C4. They have also announced more particulars of the fully electric e-C4.

Known for boldness of design and for technology, Citroen has a long history in the segment and the new C4, like many of its predecessors has a character all of its own compared to what’s out there in the compact hatchback market. It will be available in a choice of petrol, diesel or all-electric, and will be first seen in Ireland in the first quarter of next year. Prices and detailed specifications will be announced closer to the launch of the car.

For now, we get a look at the pictures where the front end of the new C4 comes with a V-shaped lighting signature and includes double-stage headlights with chrome chevrons stretched across the entire width of the vehicle. These iconic chevrons flow into to the LED daytime running lights at the top and extend to the LED headlights at the bottom.

The bonnet, high and horizontal, echoes the concave shape of the bigger C5 Aircross SUV and exudes an energetic and assertive attitude. The unique roof line, combined with the sloping rear window, clearly expresses the aerodynamics of the vehicle, while the rear spoiler enhances the vitality of the body shape.

It has a gently sloping roof and overhanging side windows and is a nod to the iconic Citroen GS but also offers a design feature that allows for a generous boot volume of 380 litres.

Personalisation levels are vast and the C4 comes with a choice of 31 colour combinations thanks to seven exterior colours options and five exterior colour packs. There are also six different interior choices and a host of alloy wheel options available to ensure optimal customisation.

On the inside, the wide horizontal dashboard gives passengers a feeling of space and volume while the chevron grain pattern on the dashboard and Satin chrome (or high-gloss black) accents on the vents, steering wheel, instrument panel and cabin controls offer a comfortable cabin experience by clearly identifying useful touchpoints.
