US giant Dexcom's temporary base will be in Athenry town centre

Dexcom’s temporary Athenry headquarters will be located in the town centre for around three years while the US multinational awaits the construction of its manufacturing facility on the IDA’s 30-hectare strategic site.

The medical device company will move into a building owned by Galway County Council on the corner of North Gate Street and Burke’s Lane.

The property was purchased by the local authority last November for an undisclosed sum, and was part of the ‘package’ that helped lure the multinational medical device company to locate in Athenry, where it will create 1,000 jobs and a further 500 during construction of the new facility.

The building has been derelict for 12 years, but was previously a bakery and restaurant, and workshop.  It will now be renovated under various Government funding schemes, and used as a headquarters by Dexcom.

Councillors in the Athenry/Oranmore Municipal District unanimously approved a Part 8 planning application to renovate the building at their meeting on Tuesday.

Standing orders were suspended to allow Adrian Furey, Dexcom’s Vice-President of Global Supply Chain to briefly address the meeting, which was also attended by IDA representatives.

Mr Furey thanked Galway County Council for providing the proposed multi-purpose community and enterprise facility to Dexcom.

He said they needed a home in Athenry and this building would be their home for the next few years.

He said last Friday was a great day when the €300m investment in Athenry was announced, but Tuesday “was even better” after councillors approved the Part 8 planning application, which facilitated a change of use of the building to offices.
