Galway United 1
Athlone Town 2
CORK City will finish the season as champions, Waterford FC look like finishing second, and Galway United simply look finished after yet another woeful result for John Caulfield’s side that means it is now just one win in the last seven league games for the Tribesmen.
It was Athlone Town’s first win in the league at Terryland Park/Eamonn Deacy Park in 25 years, and while the visitors celebrated a result that means they will not finish bottom of the table, some anger being directed towards the United dugout was also a worrying indicator of how the mood has soured in the past couple of months.
Back at the end of May, United were top of the table and two points ahead of Cork City as the two sides prepared to meet at Eamonn Deacy Park. The visitors won that game 1-0, despite being outplayed for much of the 90 minutes, and United have gone into freefall ever since.
The Tribesmen had won 12 of their first 15 games heading into that encounter – they have won just five of their next 15 since that defeat, and have now fallen to third in the table after Waterford managed to overturn a nine-point deficit in the table into a three-point lead over the Tribesmen.
Friday’s failure against the Midlands side means United have taken just one point from a possible nine in games against the cast-adrift bottom three of Bray Wanderers, Athlone Town, and Bray Wanderers.
