Unique musical journey coming to a close
An ambitious musical series that spanned more than three years and celebrated music from across the EU is coming to a close.
From Europe With Love, which was curated by Galway’s ConTempo Quartet in association with the Galway Music Residency, explored the string quartet repertoire from all 27 EU states.
Twenty-five concerts have already taken place and the final two will be held at the city’s St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Tuesday next, March 1, and on Tuesday, April 5. These lunchtime events run from 1.10pm to 1.50pm.
Next Tuesday’s performance will celebrate the music of Lithuania as ConTempo Quartet perform music by Onute Narbutaite, one of that country’s best-known composers. Also featuring is Eduardas Balsys who is renowned for his compositions as well as his performance as part of Lithuania’s national football team! That concert will be introduced by the Lithuanian Ambassador to Ireland Marijus Gudynas.
The finale of the From Europe with Love series on Tuesday, April 5, will celebrate the music of Finland. ConTempo will perform Sibelius’ Voces intimae, the composer’s only major work for string quartet from his mature period. Sibelius described it “as something wonderful. The kind of thing that brings a smile to your lips at the hour of death”.
That concert will be introduced by the director of Galway Community Circus Ulla Hokkanen.
The Executive Director of the Galway Music Residency Maeve Bryan describes the conclusion of the three-year series as “bitter-sweet”. As far as she’s aware, it was a unique venture and she looks forward to its legacy.
