The extent of cuts being proposed across the HSE West region is causing anger among health union officials.
In a presentation to unions at Merlin Park this morning, the HSE revealed plans to cut ten percent of Home Help hours and 300 contract jobs.
They also plan to reduce the working hours of hundreds of contract staff, a move which according to union officials would achieve the equivalent of 1000 job losses.
Also being discussed is a reduction in the number of radiologists working at University Hospital Galway by five.
