Galway 0-13
Mayo 2-6
DARREN KELLY IN CASTLEBAR
GALWAY’S senior ladies footballers again found the answers when under pressure last Sunday as they maintained their unbeaten run and booked their place in the National League Final.
Five first-half Róisín Leonard points and a four-score unanswered spell through Kate Slevin, Eva Noone and Ailbhe Davoren ensured the maroon and white the spoils in torrential weather conditions, leaving Mayo to battle Donegal in avoiding relegation.
The opening stages were without a score. Galway were guilty of four wides and a few chances dropping short. But both teams were trying to gradually manoeuvre possession through the lines to provide the best chance to register.
Some shots looked poor but one had to be in Castlebar to fully appreciate the difficult conditions. However, the phoney war ended on 13 minutes when Mayo drew the first blade.
Just outside the scoring zone, Lisa Cafferky held the ball before setting up Fiona McHale. The Carnacon veteran sent a precision pass into the square with Rachel Kearns the target.
However, the Aussie Rules footballer sold the dummy as a Galway defender collided with keeper Karen Connolly. O’Connor Cup winner with DCU last week Tara Needham was on hand to stroke the ball into the net.
A three-pointer appeared massive but Galway 2023 don’t do panic. Two minutes later, the advancing Aoife Molloy was brought down and Leonard, disappointed with her earlier misses, split the posts for the visitors.
