Galway United will look to snap a two-game home losing run when surprise league leaders Drogheda United rock up to Eamonn Deacy Park tonight (7.45pm).
Back-to-back defeats on their home patch at the hands of Shamrock Rovers and Derry City have taken some of the gloss off a decent start to the season, particularly the most recent of those losses at the hands of City.
The Candystripes came into the game on the back of a defeat at home to Drogheda and seemingly ripe for the picking by United, but the home side produced their poorest display of the season to go down by the odd goal in five, with Vince Borden’s last-gasp effort giving the final scoreline a closer look than was the case.
One constant about this United squad, however, is that they rarely produce consecutive disappointing performances, and just as they bounced back from their defeat by one Rovers to win at the home of the other for the first time in the league in almost 30 years, they followed that defeat to the Ulster side by taking a point from the home of the champions on Easter Monday.
Shelbourne might have enjoyed something like 75% possession in Tolka Park, but a lot of that was tippy-tappy lateral stuff that looks great in terms of statistics, but doesn’t exactly make for thrilling viewing.
United may have found themselves trailing twice, and also had to survive a late onslaught, but they scored two quality goals through Moses Dyer – what a find he has turned out to be – and were also twice denied by the woodwork as they finished 2-2 with Damien Duff’s side on the northside of Dublin on Monday evening.
While those two sides were playing out an entertaining draw, tonight’s opponents were also taking a point from a meeting with a Dublin side, though that scoreless draw at home to St Patrick’s Athletic lacked the spark of the game an hour down the road.
Still, it was enough to keep Kevin Doherty’s charges at the top of the pile as they continue a remarkable run since the end of last season that smacks a bit of Leicester City a decade ago, when the Foxes just about avoided relegation in the 2014/15 season, only to go on and capture the league title the very next year.
