Grammy-nominated American singer-songwriter Valerie June and special guest Canada’s Doug Paisley will be in concert in the Róisín Dubh on Wednesday next, October 16, at 8pm.
Their show is the latest in a series of Autumn gigs being presented by the city’s Black Gate cultural centre.
Tennessee woman Valerie June blends folk, soul, blues and traditional Appalachian elements to create her own, unique timeless sound.
With three best-selling solo albums to date, she has been described by the New York Times as one of America’s “most intriguing, fully formed new talents”, while her albums have been praised by the likes of Rolling Stone, The Washington Post, NPR Music, No Depression, Mojo and Uncut.
She has also written songs for artists such as Mavis Staples and The Blind Boys of Alabama, and has performed on the Tonight Show and Later with Jools Holland.
Her guest will be folk musician Doug Paisley, whose songs, guitar playing and voice have earned him comparisons to the likes of Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. Like them, he’s not afraid to set easy sounds against hard truths as he sings his plainspoken laments with an understated intensity.
Praised by publications including Rolling Stone, MOJO, The New Yorker and The Wall Street Journal, Doug has collaborated musically with Bonnie Prince Billy , Leslie Feist and The Band’s Garth Hudson.
Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets €27.50 from bit.ly/blackgatetickets.
