Timber prices fall as building slackens

A SLOWDOWN in consumer confidence, the war in Ukraine and a general ‘easing back’ on various building projects have been given as the main reasons for a slump in timber prices over the past six months.

According to IFA Forestry representatives, the price per tonne for what are called sawlogs in the industry (essentially the timber for building projects) has dropped by about 20% this year as compared to 2021 prices.

Galway IFA Forestry Representative, Enda Monaghan, said that while last year’s prices were probably artificially high, there was still a dramatic enough decrease in prices over the past few months.

“Sawlogs – the timber used in the building industry – are back from a high of around €130 per tonne to between €80 and €110 per tonne.

“There just has been a drop in demand over recent months for timber which probably does indicate a slowing down of the building industry across the country,” said Enda Monaghan.
