A man with 224 previous convictions was handed a three-month prison sentence for an incident during which he drunkenly lay on the floor of Gort Credit Union, blocking the entrance.
Kieran Carney (41) of no fixed abode was before Gort District Court where he pleaded guilty to a number of public order offences at Bridge Street, Gort on June 17, 2025.
The court heard the staff at the Credit Union had to lock the door due to his aggression, to protect staff and customers.
Prosecuting Sergeant Claire Heneghan said of Carney’s 224 previous convictions, 132 were for public order offences.
Defending solicitor Martina Moran said her client was “extremely intoxicated” and lay down on the mat at the Credit Union door.
He had a long history of alcohol abuse, she said, and was currently in custody serving a nine-month sentence.
Judge Alec Gabbett asked if Carney, who was still “very young”, would try residential treatment for his addiction issues and was told that he had gone through such programmes before but they didn’t work.
The defendant had been homeless, on and off, for the past 20 years.
Judge Gabbett imposed a three-month prison sentence to run concurrently with Carney’s current sentence.
