The Sound of Music is the world’s best loved musical, and Claregalway’s 9 Arch Musical Society is bringing it to the Town Hall Theatre from Thursday to Saturday, November the 15-17.
Set in Austria in 1938 in the build-up to World War II, The Sound of Music features renowned songs such as My Favourite Things, Do Re Mi, Edelweiss and Climb every Mountain.
The story of a motherless family and the impact their new nanny has on their lives, including that of their stern father, still enthrals people decades later. And the story’s incorporation of the encroaching Nazi malevolence gives it a particular resonance for today’s audience.
The musical follows the story of Maria, played by Megan Lohan, a young, free-spirited postulant who goes to live as governess to the Von Trapp children, and ends up falling in love with the Captain, played by the talented Alan Greaney. There are many twists and turns from the moment that Mother Abbess, played by Annette Cavanagh, tells Maria that she must find her true path in life, until the pair finally marry.
The show about the Von Trapp family has a Greaney family connection too, as the young actress playing Gretl is Alan’s daughter Faye. The show culminates with the Von Trapps singing at a concert, before fleeing from the Nazis, travelling across the mountains to Switzerland.
Jay Molynenx returns to 9 Arch as director and choreographer, while the very talented Shane Farrell once again takes up the baton as musical director.
The show promises to be wonderful night’s entertainment, full of beautiful solos with a stunning nuns’ chorus, all topped off with a fabulous children’s family singing group.
Tickets for The Sound of Music are available from the Town Hall Theatre, tht.ie, 091-569777 or at the box office.
