One of the country’s best-known Irish language broadcasters has shown her support for a campaign designed to bring the language alive in second-level schools around the country.
TG4 and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta Máire Treasa Ní Dhubhghaill dropped in to meet students from Coláiste Cholmcille, close to home in Indreabhrán, as she was announced as the official ambassador for SPRAOI’24.
This is a returning campaign run by Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI) has announced the launch of SPRAOI’24, celebrating the Irish language in post-primary schools across Ireland – and bringing it to life in a fun and meaningful way.
From September to December, students are encouraged to participate in a series of competitions designed to spark creativity and enthusiasm as Gaeilge – whether they attend English-medium or Irish-medium schools.
SPRAOI’24 features a range of competitions that cater to every interest and level of language proficiency.
Whether students are crafting imaginative stories, delivering lively commentary, or writing their own rap songs, the emphasis is on making the Irish language accessible and fun.
The competitions are open to all post-primary students and categories are open to Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle students. This year, every class, regardless of the subject, is encouraged to participate, reinforcing the idea that Irish is for everyone.
Speaking at the launch of SPRAOI’24, Paddy Lavelle, General Secretary of ETBI, emphasised the importance of keeping the Irish language alive and relevant for the next generation.
“At ETBI, we firmly believe that the Irish language is a vital connection to our cultural heritage and a powerful tool for shaping the future,” he said.
“Through initiatives like SPRAOI’24, we are not only promoting a love of Gaeilge but also ensuring that it is accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for all students.
“Our commitment to the Irish language and Irish-medium education goes beyond the classroom—it’s about fostering a deeper appreciation for the language and empowering young people to embrace it in their daily lives,” he added.
Bringing her passion and energy to the initiative, TG4 and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta broadcaster, and ETB Hero Máire Treasa Ní Dhubhghaill, said she hoped to inspire students across Ireland to participate and enjoy the language in a new and exciting way.
“It’s fantastic to see so many students engaging with the Irish language. I’m honoured to be part of SPRAOI’24 and look forward to seeing the amazing work that students will create over the coming months,” said Máire Treasa.
SPRAOI’24 will culminate in a celebration of Irish-medium education and a prize-giving ceremony in January, when schools will come together to share ideas, connect with each other, and showcase the richness of their language learning experiences.
