Plans lodged for 8-turbine windfarm in North Galway

Published:

Plans lodged for 8-turbine windfarm in North Galway

Plans have been lodged with An Bord Pleanala for a new windfarm in North Galway.

The 8-turbine development would be located at Laurclavagh and adjacent townlands.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The turbines would have a blade tip length of 185 metres – and when completed, the wind farm would generate an estimated 56MW.

This makes it a Strategic Infrastructure Development – and therefore it goes straight to An Bord Pleanala rather than county planners.

A decision is due in September.

Green light for Lidl in Claregalway after An Bord Pleanala ruling

Green light for Lidl in Claregalway after An Bord Pleanala ruling

The green light has been given for a Lidl store in Claregalway – after An Bord Pleanala ruled in favor of the project.

Just over a year ago, county planners refused permission for a variety of reasons.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The plans will see a new Lidl supermarket built on a greenfield site on the N83 in the centre of the village.

Rejecting the plans last year, county planners felt the development would pose a traffic hazard and be a danger to public safety.

Concerns were also raised about flooding, and the proposed design failing to properly integrate with the urban design of Claregalway.

There were also considerable submissions from local residents expressing concern that it could lead to even worse traffic conditions.

But following an appeal to An Bord Pleanala, approval for the supermarket has now been granted.

Inspectors were satisfied that it won’t cause flooding, would be acceptable in terms of traffic and pedestrian safety, and would not be detrimental to the character of the area.

63 new builds started in county and city so far this year

Commencement notices for 63 new homes have been received by Building Control Authorities so far this year in Galway city and county.

The majority, 55, are in the county, while just 8 new builds have started in the city.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

It’s more or less in line with the number of new commencement notices received in the same period last year.

That’s despite there being an 85 percent increase in new homes built nationally this February compared to last.

Tourism operators optimistic of visitor boom for Galway Tourism operators optimistic of visitor boom for Galway

Businesses in the tourism sector are hopeful of a boost in visitor numbers to Galway this summer.

Some 44% are expecting an increase in visitors in 2024, Fáilte Ireland spokesperson Ann Marie Duffin told the Galway City Tribune.

She said that operators expect the see visitor number exceed their pre-Covid levels.

“As well as a strong domestic market, tourism businesses are expecting to see strong visitor numbers from overseas and we are set to have the highest ever air access capacity this year, with levels above both 2019 and 2023.”

Looking at trends that were evident in Galway last year – the first full season after the Covid pandemic – Ms Duffin said domestic bookings had a much shorter lead time, but still performed well.

“There was also excellent value perception from the US market.

“In terms of visitor trends in 2024, we’re seeing a continued demand for outdoor activities such as on-water activities, cycling and walking trails. Visitors are also increasingly looking at the sustainability credentials of attractions and activities.”

Last year, Fáilte Ireland began the development of a five-year sustainable tourism Destination and Experience Development Plan for Galway City in February 2023.

Noeleen rebuffs overtures from new party Independent Ireland                 Noeleen rebuffs overtures from new party Independent Ireland

Bradley Bytes – a sort of political column with Dara Bradley

Noel Grealish has rebuffed overtures to join the country’s newest party, Independent Ireland.

The Galway West TD confirmed to Bradley Bytes that he would remain independent – despite efforts by Michael Collins, leader of the fledgling party, to sign him up.

Noeleen confirmed he had received an email from Collins – no phone call or face-to-face approach – asking him to meet about joining the ranks of Independent Ireland.

But the Carnmore man told him straight out, he had no interest in meeting or joining the new party.

Though they are friendly, and know each other socially, Noel Grealish said he would have more leverage and influence on Government by remaining an Independent than linking up with Collins.

Previously, the former and final Progressive Democrat leader, had been approached to join Fianna Fáil but the in-demand politician says he’s staying solo.

Although, he may not be solo for long! Tomás Grealish, his brother, has announced he will contest for a seat on Galway County Council, representing Athenry/Oranmore, as a replacement for Jim Cuddy, who is retiring at the next Local Election.

Meanwhile, Independent Ireland has made some inroads in Galway. One of its three Oireachtas members is Roscommon-Galway TD, Michael Fitzmaurice.

It recruited Noel Larkin, Galway City East councillor, and Declan Kelly, a county councillor in Portumna this week. And controversial Oughterard councillor Seamus Walsh, who has resigned from Fianna Fáil, has also batted his eyelids in its direction.
